Ok so this has been nagging at me for a while now...

Lately (at least here in Sweden) cosplay has become this huge competition and there are a lot of people bashing other people if they don't have a "perfect" cosplay ...and it gets on my nerves like nothing else!! Who the hell decides what a "perfect" cosplay is anyway??

These days I hear oh so many people saying "They really didn't do that very good" or "OMG did you see that wig? horrible!" and stuff like that, and it just makes me so sad! Have they forgotten what cosplay is really about? Having FUN, and expressing our SHARED insert for something, making our favourite characters come to life, play around and meet new people. NOT looking down on others coz you think you're better than them! I makes me ashamed to be a part of this community.

I just read a post on fb where this girl wrote that she couldn't believe why people buy cosplays, and basically said everyone who doesn't make their entire cosplay themselves aren't real cosplayers. And it really made me mad! So here I am speaking up about it.

I continuously try to get better at cosplay. Before it was coz I wanted to get better, for my own sake, now it feels more like I have to or I'll get looked down at by other "better" cosplayers. I don't feel comfortable cosplaying a "casual" character at a convention anymore, or a character that isn't just right. Because I KNOW there will be someone out there thinking I'm not doing it well enough. Thankfully I'm the kind of person who doesn't care too much what strangers think, but it still gets to me. And I can't help but compare myself to other people because of this.

I've even made a decision to start going to conventions having a "bad" cosplay at least half a day there. Only to go against this trend and to show that you don't have to be perfect to cosplay! That being said, I'm not claiming to be perfect normally, far from it. I just wanna show that you can have just as much fun, probably even more if you don't check your make-up every 10 minutes and spend hours getting ready in the morning. I really hurts my pride as a cosplayer when I hear people bashing each other! We all started out as "bad" cosplayers... no, I'm not gonna use that word coz I really don't think there's such a thing as a bad cosplayer, nor do I think there's such a thing as a perfect one. We're all cosplayers, period =) But we all started out somewhere and learned for there. Some quicker than others, and some chose to stay where they are, just having fun, not thinking too much of the details. AND THAT'S FINE!

I'm not saying there's anything wrong in trying to better yourself, as long as you don't look down on others for staying the way they are. We all have our own ambitions and goals and we should respect that. If you want to buy all your cosplays, then do ^^ and if you wanna make them, so be it =) but don't go around judging others because they're not doing the same thing you are, because cosplay is so much more than making a costume and taking cool pictures.

This is my opinion, and I stand by it.

As a conclusion I wanted to ask; Is this just here in Sweden or have you guys noticed this trend elsewhere as well? I would very much like to know! as well as your own thoughts on this subject =)

Thanx! - Nari

I've seen a lot of that on multiple social media pages all around the world!!! Europe, US, UK! There's even a "Bad" Cosplayers Instagram account where people go to certain conventions (including one I attended,) and they bash cosplayers for their "Ugly, Horrible, Cosplay." I never got bashed, thankfully, but others did and it made me feel horrible! I've confronted them many times... I think what you said in your journal makes a TON of sense, and should be thought of by all cosplayers. No one should bash others for their so-called "bad" cosplay. No one really has  "bad" cosplay.

That's HORRIBLE!! =O It's things like that that makes me so mad and so sad! =( BUT we can stop them!!! if we just spread the word far enough I'm sure we can do at least a little to help turn things in the right direction! Therefore I'd be SO happy if you could make your own "My opinion on Cosplay" journal and wriite about your thoughts surrounding this subject! That way we're sure to get more people to open their eyes, and I'd get to read more of your thoughts on this :happybounce:

sadly we also have Cosplay 'snobs' here in the UK even through it is a small percentage but we still have them but a lot of the time it is because they do it to make themselves feel better and I think that's wrong of them when Cosplay is for everyone as it is a way to show and share your love for manga, anime and videogames.

Glad to hear you agree with me! Sad to hear you have this problem in the UK too though =( And I'd love to keep talking about this! but I don't really have the time to go into a big discussion =( SO! I'd instead love it if you could make your own "My opinion on Cosplay" journal and write a bit about what you think of this subject there =D That way we can spread the word AND I'd get to read more of your opinions :shuffelin:

I've definitely noticed this in my own country and even in other countries through friends. It's a sad thing that seems to have swept the Western cosplay community (I don't know about Asia, but definitely Europe and the US) and it's such a shame because we really are a minority group :/
I couldn't agree with you more, Nari!
